Maxitag is not a registered club or association. There is no committee, there are no rules, we do not carry Public Liability Insurance. We are simply a group of scooter / motorcycle owners who enjoy getting out for social rides.
We make strenuous efforts to organise safe rides, on well-formed roads, travel at safe speeds with as many safety measures as possible to ensure that everyone enjoys the experience, and we nominate riders to keep an eye on the convoy. We strongly recommend all riders wear appropriate riding gear and follow some simple convoy riding rules (see below), but cannot enforce such measures. We rely entirely on responsible, voluntary cooperation.
You are welcome to join us, but you do so at your own risk. Maxitag will not accept any liability for accidents or mishaps that occur during rides.
Elementary convoy rules:
- Wherever road conditions permit, always ride in staggered formation (within the lane) to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions in the event of sudden stops.
- Always allow sufficient space behind the preceding vehicle to allow you to stop, and stay alert for speed changes.
- Use the 'buddy' system. Keep an eye on the rider immediately in front of you, and the one immediately behind you. If one stops, you should all stop other buddy groups will see this.
- We always nominate a 'Sweep' rider (Tail-End Charlie), usually with a radio so that the Lead rider can be told if delays happen at the back of the convoy. Usually there are other riders with radios, as well.
- If you are riding at position #2, and the lead rider signals a turn followed by pointing repeatedly at the curb, please pull over and park with your turn indicator flashing to warn following riders (out of sight of the leader). Once the sweep rider has passed, rejoin the convoy the sweep rider will let you past and you take up whatever position you like. There is now a new rider #2, ready to pull over on the next ambiguous corner.
- The Lead rider will usually ride at, or marginally under the posted speed limit. With large convoys, riding too slow causes an impassable traffic jam. Sadly, other motorists tend to try reckless manoeuvers to get by this can actually be more dangerous to convoy riders than going too fast. If you are not comfortable riding at highway speed limits, you should not join a convoy ride.
- If you need to stop for any reason, attract the attention of either a radio user or the Sweep rider, who will always be bringing up the rear.
